Flawlessly natural and awfully funny.
— DigBoston's review of Avery in "Proof"

Hello! I’m Avery Bargar. I’m a Manhattan based actor, comedy writer, and musician originally from the Puritan North. I defected from my beloved hometown of Boston in 2018. I hope to die there one day, but recent experience says I might die in New York. I’m represented by The Talent Express for acting in theatre, film, TV, and commercials.

I have performed in plays (drama, comedy, and Shakespeare) all over the Northeast. My writing has been published in Points In Case, The Weekly Humorist and The Boston Globe.

I play German Chancellor Hans Thüring in NEWTS! Coproduced by PRX, NEWTS! is a musical radio drama featuring some amazing Broadway talent, the one and only Mo Rocca, and ME.

The show is a runaway hit, getting glowing reviews in the BBC, Vulture, The Guardian, Radio France, and more. In January, 2023 we got nominated for Best Fiction Podcast of the Year by the Podcast Academy!

Start from the beginning, or tune in at Episode 5 (to the right) to hear me sing an Ode to Newts.

Hammers & Felt

My debut solo piano EP “Hammers & Felt” dropped in July 2022! Listen to it here. “Ma’oz Tzur,” “On The Sunny Side Of The Street,” and “Autumn Leaves” are my original arrangements, and “Left Alone” is my own composition. I have been playing each of these songs for years, and I’m excited to share them with you as you’ll hear them here. If you enjoy them, let me know. If you don’t, you can still let me know. That might be even more useful, if you’re specific about it.

An in-demand music director of improvisational theater, I play piano for many of New York and New England's best improvisers, and tour the country with family comedy juggernaut The Story Pirates. In bands I traveled all over New England, and you can often catch me behind the keys for many companies and venues I’ll plug here!

I love The Beatles, Queen, The Rutles, Jim Croce, Nichols and May, Second City, baked goods, cats, and dogs that look like they might actually be a person in a dog costume. I have been an actor, musician, songwriter, theatre teacher, caterer, caddy, and a has-been.
